Learn how to design and create charming, hand-drawn, illustrated watercolor maps in this jam-packed 2-DAY WORKSHOP* conducted on site at Sarasota's landmark Villa Serena Inn. Watercolor maps capture the essence of a place like no Google map can. They go beyond geography and leap into the realm of personal experience and recollection. They’re a reflection of you! In this class, we’ll approach mapmaking in a step-by-step fashion, starting with a brainstorming session then moving into creating a rough draft. After the mechanics have been ironed out, the real fun begins as we fine-tune our primary illustrations and add text and extra goodies like trees, boats, borders, or decorative flourishes. It all comes together in the end with juicy watercolor washes that add the finishing touch to your map. Throughout the process, I’ll give you loads of design ideas, watercolor demonstrations, drawing hints, and lettering options. It’s a complete mapmaking package all wrapped up inside two fun-filled days at The Villa! (Level: Beginner-Intermediate. Some experience with drawing and watercolor will be helpful for this course. ) * Please note that this is a TWO DAY WORKSHOP that runs from 9am to 4pm with a one hour lunch break. Students are responsible for bringing their own supplies and lunch. A supply list will be sent to you well before the scheduled workshop dates. Map illustration has had a real resurgence over the past few years. An exciting alternative to a dry Google map, illustrated maps can be filled with character and fun detail to truly capture the atmosphere of a city. Creating your own map illustrations is a challenging exercise in composition, but can be a great addition to your design portfolio.  ABOUT THE ARTIST Leslie Fehling is a watercolor artist, workshop instructor, and art blogger from western Pennsylvania. Her illustrated watercolor journals are filled with sketches that celebrate everyday life and chronicle her travel adventures. She has taught sketchbook journaling and watercolor workshops in the US and abroad since 2014. Her unique approach to illustrated watercolor journaling and her enthusiastic teaching style have made her a sought-after instructor, and her workshops have empowered students of all skill levels.
